IELTS, or the International English Language Testing System, is a standardized test that assesses the English language proficiency of non-native speakers for study, work, or migration. It consists of four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, with scores on a band scale from 1 to 9. There are two main versions, Academic and General Training, depending on the purpose of the test.

Test types

IELTS Academic:

Used for university and higher education applications, professional registration, and student visas.

IELTS General Training:

  • Used for work, job applications in English-speaking environments, or to prove English skills for immigration.

Test format

  • Sections: The test consists of four papers: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

  • Length: The total test time is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.

  • Delivery: Available in paper-based, computer-based, or online formats (online is only for Academic candidates).

Scoring

  • Scale: Scores are awarded on a band scale from 1 to 9, in half-band increments.

  • Overall score: An overall score is produced from the results of the four sections.

  • No pass or fail: There is no pass or fail; instead, you receive a band score based on your performance.
